An Oregon school district has stirred up a Christmas debate as to what type of decorations should be allowed in public schools during the holiday season.

Hillsboro School District recently issued a memo to its staff, telling them not to use Santa Claus in their holiday decorations at school. According to the memo, district administration said it’s a way to respect all religious beliefs.

In part, the letter distributed to teachers, not parents, read:

“You may still decorate your door or office if you like, but we ask that you be respectful and sensitive to the diverse perspectives and beliefs of our community and refrain from using religious-themed decorations or images like Santa Claus.”

Several other school districts in the Portland, Ore. area have similar policies.
