LANCASTER, PA. — A man was convicted Wednesday in Lancaster County Court of firing shots on a crowded Lancaster street outside his brother’s funeral last year.
Lovelle Weaver, 36, was convicted of felony aggravated assault and possessing a firearm without a license, and misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment (five counts) and discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure (home).
Weaver opened fire as he was chasing a man in the 500 block of Chester Street, outside Jared Weaver’s funeral at Bethel AME Church on East Strawberry Street on Oct. 7, 2015.
A woman and her two young kids ducked for cover as Weaver fired five shots.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Fetterman, who won the conviction, called the woman and others at the scene that day to testify.
Fetterman also showed jurors Lancaster Safety Coalition camera footage that showed a man with a gun on the block. Police located individuals who identified the man in the video as Weaver.
Attorneys presented closing arguments Wednesday morning. The jury deliberated for about 90 minutes before deciding the case at 1:30 p.m.
Weaver will be sentenced at a later date.
At the verdict, Fetterman requested that Weaver’s bail be raised from $500,000 to $1 million. County Judge Margaret Miller, who presided over the trial, granted that request.
Lancaster city police Detective Eric McCrady filed charges.
