Carlisle Borough Council will host a public hearing tonight at 6:45 p.m. to discuss where in the borough a medical marijuana grower can grow it legally.

Pennsylvania became the 24th state earlier this year to legalize medical marijuana. Shortly thereafter, borough council members started thinking about its zoning map, and where growers should be allowed to set up shop.

Zoning requirements can’t be used against medical marijuana growers, under state law. State law doesn’t allow municipalities to impose stricter zoning requirements on them compared to what they would normally require of similar businesses. Borough solicitor Keith Brenneman was directed by council to advertise an ordinance amending borough code. Residents can address council members tonight with their comments, and concerns about the new zoning ordinance.

The concern is whether business owners and residents in the borough would be comfortable with a marijuana grower being permitted to grow it next to their residence, public and private schools, and other locations, such as day cares.
