LANCASTER, Pa. — Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said an 8-year-old boy drowned over the weekend during a birthday pool party at a Lancaster County Hotel.

It happened Saturday after John Harvilicz went sliding into the pool at the indoor water playground at the Double Tree Resort by Hilton Hotel Lancaster.

EMS tried to resuscitate Harvilicz all the way to the hospital but they were unsuccessful and he died at the hospital.

Harvilicz, who is from Shrewsbury, apparently did not know how to swim and was not being watched when he went into the pool, Diamontoni said.

The boy was attending a party for a friend. It is unknown if a lifeguard was on duty.
