Governor Wolf today met personally with Lieutenant Governor Michael Stack to hand-deliver a letter informing him that he and his wife will no longer be afforded the protective detail provided as a courtesy by the Pennsylvania State Police. Further, the Department of General Services will provide only limited cleaning, grounds keeping and maintenance at the state-owned residence at Fort Indiantown Gap only under limited supervision at prearranged times.
The Governor’s letter said:
“After consultation with the Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police and the Secretary of General Services, I write to inform you that, effective immediately, you and Mrs. Stack will no longer be afforded the protective detail provided to you as a courtesy by the Pennsylvania State Police. In addition, the Department of General Services will provide limited cleaning, grounds keeping and maintenance at The State House and only under supervision at prearranged times.
I do not delight in this decision, but I believe it is a necessary step to protect Commonwealth employees.”
Lt. Gov. Stack released the following statement:
“I recognize, as does my wife, that certain behavior while dealing with the staff of the Lieutenant Governor’s residence and the Pennsylvania State Police Executive Detail who protects us, is unacceptable and were symptoms of a larger problem. Today, in meeting with Governor Wolf, I apologized directly to him for any embarrassment this situation has caused, discussed with him some of the reasons for what has occurred, and reiterated our commitment to addressing the causes forcefully and fully. For all of these reasons, during today’s meeting, I concurred with the Governor’s decision to remove the executive detail that protected us and the remaining staff member at the residence.”
A state agency is investigating whether Lt. Gov. Mike Stack and his wife, Tonya, verbally abused state employees at the “State House” at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County, where the lieutenant governor traditionally resides. His chief of staff confirmed the investigation deals with “work place issues” related to services provided to the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
“I’m not a perfect human being. I make mistakes. I get stressed. I get angry. I said things in anger or stress that I wish I had not said. I’m glad I know the two magic words, I’m sorry, because I’ve used them a lot in my life,” Stack said during a press conference. He also apologized on behalf of his wife, Tonya, who reportedly is also involved in the alleged mistreatment of workers.
