FAIRVIEW TWP., Pa. - A six-year-old boy died Tuesday after he was hit by a vehicle on Interstate 83. The coroner has identified the boy as Bryce James Treichler, of the 200 block of Lincoln Drive, New Cumberland.

The accident, which occurred around 5 p.m., happened on I-83 northbound near mile marker 38.6. According to State Police, Treichler was struck by a vehicle.

Treichler's grandmother spoke to FOX43 Tuesday, providing further details about how the accident happened.

According to the grandmother, the boy was riding a dirtbike in the backyard of a home on the 200 block of Lincoln Drive, which runs parallel to I-83. The backyard of the home faces the interstate, but there appeared to be a several foot drop from the backyard of the home to the highway, as well as a wooded area between the interstate and the home.

Somehow he lost control of the dirtbike and ended up on the interstate, where he was hit and killed by an oncoming pickup truck. State police had earlier identified the boy as a seven-year-old, but the coroner's office confirmed the age shared by the grandmother.

The woman described it as a "tragic accident," and said multiple family members and friends rushed to the home once they got word of what had happened.

The York County Coroner says he died of blunt force trauma, and no autopsy will be performed.

There was a lane restriction, but the accident scene was cleared by 8 p.m. Tuesday. State police are continuing to investigate the accident.

A memorial fund has been set up in Treichler's honor.
