Today (August 16) is National Rum Day!
Scientists at Candela Mamjuana, the first premium spiced rum specialty drink from the Dominican Republic, asked 700 Americans over the age of 21 their opinions around everyone’s favorite Caribben concotion.
These are some of the results:
- 25% said drinking rum makes them feel like they are on vacation
- 32% said they like their rum drinks tropical and nearly 25% say rum is their vacation drink of choice
- 64% said they like rum, with 66% preferring light rum over dark
The top 5 rum drinks are:
- Rum and Coke – 30%
- Pina Colada – 19%
- Long Island Iced Tea – 15%
- Daiquiri – 11%
- Shots – 7%

Rum and Coke
(a.k.a. Cuba Libre)
4 oz. cola
1/3 oz. fresh lime juice
1 2/3 oz. white rum
Add all ingredients in a highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with lime wedge.
Pina Colada
1/2 cup crushed ice
6 oz. pineapple juice
2 oz. rum
1 oz. sweetened coconut rum
1 oz. heavy cream
1 pineapple wedge
1 maraschino cherry
In a blender, combine ice, pineapple juice, rum, coconut cream and heavy cream. Blend until smooth. Pour into glass and garnish with pineapple wedge and cherry.

Long Island Iced Tea
1/2 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. gin
1/2 oz. rum
1/2 triple sec
1/2 oz. tequila
1 oz. gomme syrup
1 oz. lemon juice
splash of cola
Add all ingredients into highball glass filled with ice. Stir gently. Garnish with lemon spiral. Serve with straw.
Daiquiri
2 oz. light rum
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
3/4 oz. Demerara sugar syrup
Add all the ingredients into a shaker with ice, and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a lime twist.
Mojito
6 mint leaves
3/4 oz. simple syrup (one part water, one part sugar)
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
1 1/2 oz. white rum
1 1/2 oz. club soda
In a shaker, lightly muddle the mint. Add the simple syrup, lime juice and rum, and fill with ice. Shake well and pour (unstrained) into a highball glass. Top with the club soda and garnish with a mint sprig.
