LANCASTER, Pa. — It's time to tumble out of bed and stumble to the theatre as "9 to 5" continues its run at the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster.
The tale of female empowerment, brought to you by the music and lyrics of country icon Dolly Parton, stands the test of time from its origins on the silver screen in 1980, now on stage fresh off a Broadway run.
"It's nothing but a good time," said Charis Leos, who plays Roz in the show.
Built on one of the most well-known country hits of all time created specifically for the film, cast members say you'll get all of the nostalgia from the original Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton hit -- while taking on a new appreciation for the story.
Actor Carolyn Anne Miller, who plays Dora Lee in the show, talks more about her role and love for the show in the interview below:
"It's brilliant, it's hysterical, there are touching moments," said Katie Sina, who plays Violet.
"It satisfies all of that as well as giving depth to a few more things," Leos said. "People won't be disappointed."
For those looking beyond the music and humor, the tale of fighting for female equality in the workplace, cast members believe, still stands the test of time in 2024.
"When you look at the timeframe, it really hasn't been that long since the changes we take for granted. It was not that long ago, like when my mom was young, that women couldn't get credit in their own name," Leos said. "Talking about them [these topics] and putting them out there is what gets people to take notice and initiate more change. "
Katie Sina took up the task of interviewing her own mother and friends, who worked as secretaries in the 70s and 80s, to get a feel for her character.
"Those interviews were amazing," Sina said. "A lot of the women I talked to were juggling child care, working, having somewhere to be 9 to 5 and having to go grocery shopping to feed their families."
Performances of "9 to 5" at the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster run through March 24th. For more information, visit the theatre's website.
