Harrisburg Board Game Day tests skills, encourages family fun

Harrisburg Board Game Day offers a full day of excitement with various tabletop games catering to all skill levels. Guests can also meet game designers.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvanians, start your brains.

Harrisburg Board Game Day is ready to put every skill level to the test. Gamers are invited to enjoy a full day of excitement with various tabletop games, from classic favorites to the latest innovations, catering to all skill levels. Participants can engage with board game designers, explore an extensive game library and participate in raffles to win prizes.

Organizers say the day is the perfect opportunity to become immersed in the world of tabletop gaming and meet people with the same interests.

"It is all across the board, so whatever you're into is going to be there" Matt Caylor, event organizer, said. "You probably won't see Monopoly, but you'll see other classics like Yahtzee and things like that. A lot of these newer-style games are going to offer those same types of impact, both for unskilled, skilled, new or seasoned players.

He says that the day is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, with every kind of game from easy-to-learn options for beginners to complex strategy games for seasoned players. Volunteers will also be available to assist players and teach the games.

Organizers say the goal of the day is to foster a community spirit where participants can share their passion and discover new aspects of the hobby.

The celebration of central Pennsylvania's gaming culture also supports local game designers by giving them a space to share their creations.

"We're going to have board game publishers who are local designers who are going to be there showcasing the games they developed, inviting people to come and sit down and try to break their games," Caylor said.

The event is free to attend and tickets are not required, but organizers do request that participants register ahead of time on Eventbrite in order to determine an approximate headcount. Those interested can also find more information on the event's Facebook page.

Harrisburg Board Game Day will take place at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, located at 222 Market Street in Harrisburg, on Saturday, Aug. 10. The schedule is as follows:

  • 2 p.m.: First round of door prize drawings
