‘It’s been a tough year,’ The Salvation Army Harrisburg falls short on toy donations

This year, 5,316 kids need gifts and The Salvation Army needs your help.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Salvation Army Harrisburg Capital City Region has broken a record of how many families need help this holiday season. This year, 5,316 kids need gifts and The Salvation Army needs your help. Two toy distributions are left and organizers are hoping the public offers some help.

“It’s been a tough year, especially for families so we saw a record number of people coming and then this year we relied on our community and donor support to help meet the needs of these kids,” said Toni Lynn Mark, Director of Development at The Salvation Army Harrisburg.

Mark said they’re so short on toys, that the toys they collected for next week's distribution is now this week's distribution. Organizers are now hoping donations will come in soon so children will have gifts for the next two toy distributions they have left.

“We try to fill as much as we can but we’re a little short on supplies right now so we’re asking the community to really help make sure that all these boxes are filled with toys and we’re looking really short for next week,” said Mark.

Some items The Salvation Army Harrisburg is looking for:

  • Winter Coats (all sizes)

  • Clothing

  • Board Games

  • Sports Equipment

  • Jewelry

  • Arts and Crafts

  • Blankets

There’s also an Amazon wishlist that donors could shop off as well. Organizers ask for community members to drop off their donations Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Donations must be in by December 18.
