YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Anyone in central Pennsylvania who wishes to learn more about the night sky is invited to a public starwatch this weekend.
The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) invites the community to bring their own telescopes or use one of the Society's to view the night sky this Saturday. Along with the stars, organizers say there's a chance a comet will be visible soon after sunset.
The comet is expected to set by 8 p.m., at which time there will be a screened astronomical presentation on current astronomy topics.
Experienced members of the Astronomical Society will guide attendees on a tour of celestial wonders, including stars and nebulae. Star charts are also available to help guests explore the nighttime sky as members of the YCAS use laser pointers to identify the constellations.
Anyone who has a telescope they do not know how to use is invited to contact the YCAS at info@astroyork.com to request a time to meet at the observatory.
The event is free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated to help the YCAS continue to bring astronomical events to York County and the surrounding areas.
The starwatch will take place from 7 - 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 at John Rudy County Park, found at 400 Mundis Race Road in York. For more details, click here.
If it is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. In the event of extreme weather, guests can call 717-759-YCAS (9227) for notice of cancellation, visit the website or check the Society's Facebook page.
