Veterans get recognition from students, staff at Red Lion Area Junior High School

The Red Lion Area Junior High School honored Veterans Day early by providing food and entertainment to area veterans.

RED LION, Pa. — The Red Lion Area Junior High School recognized Veterans Day early by providing food and entertainment to local veterans.

This isn’t the first time the school has done something like this--organizers hosted hundreds of veterans several years ago, making veterans in the area feel valued and much appreciated.

“Part of our history is our veterans,” said Amy Landis, principal of Red Lion Area Junior High School. “We would not be the nation that we are without our veterans.”

The event kicked off at 7 this morning with students shaking hands, giving fist bumps and high fives to veterans as they walked around the parking lot. Students held up pre-made signs that stated “Thank you for your service.” After the procession, veterans were welcomed into the cafeteria for a light breakfast.

“The students need to see veterans from the past and the present and understand the sacrifice that they made for our nation,” said Landis. “Maybe some of them will be future veterans and maybe it will inspire them to serve their country."

The Red Lion Area Junior High School’s choir and band performed for the veterans as they enjoyed their food. One veteran says seeing the students come together to show their appreciation made him feel right at home.

The event concluded at 9 a.m. with students returning to class and the veterans returning home. Organizers say this won’t be the last time they put on an event like this and that it was a success.
