YORK, Pa. — York County native Bernadette Lauer opened up School of Rock York this past November.
"I've always had a love for music," she said. "It's played an important part in my life."
But her path to business owner was far from traditional.
"Don't be afraid to reinvent yourself, no matter how old you are or what point you're in, in your life," she said.
The mother of four worked more than two decades in communications and the corporate world before finding her perfect match.
"Music was my place to go when I was sad or upset," said Lauer. "I would put on my headphones and escape with my music."
Now she provides that safe space for students across York County to hone their skills and have some fun while learning.
"Music is sometimes a place for other kids who haven't found their place in other extracurricular activities," she said.
Aspiring musicians ages 3 and up can learn to play the keyboard, guitar, drums and to sing.
"Our students get a private music lesson as well as a band lesson every week," said Lauer. "So that's really what makes us different."
After working together for four months, these young rockers then show off their skills to an audience.
"I'm excited about the community that we're building in the school here," said Lauer. "But I’m also excited about the difference we can make in the community, outside the doors."
A grand opening celebration is being held Sunday, March 24 from 2 - 5 p.m.
The School of Rock York is located at 930 South Richland Avenue, Suite 6 in York.
