HARRISBURG, Pa. — Update: According to the Humane Society of Harrisburg, all nine dogs have successfully been adopted!
"Everyone is so happy and grateful to the community for showing up for these sweet pups," said a spokeswoman with the humane society.
Previously: The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA) worked to help 17 dogs rescued from deplorable conditions back in January.
Of the 17 dogs rescued in January, nine were available for adoption on Thursday.
The dogs were found and rescued from a home by a humane officer. At the time, the animals were covered in their own excrement, and their matted fur required special attention, the HSHA said.
The dogs spent time in foster care or receiving medical treatment since being rescued.
"To see their faces brighten up and to see them play with toys and run around and be with other animals and people it's just been so great," said Amanda Brunish, director of marketing and public outreach at HSHA. "It's gonna be a really positive happy day to see these guys walk out the doors with their forever families."
The dogs range in age from 3-to-10 years old.
All adoptions are in-person and on a first-come, first-serve basis when the humane society opened at 11 a.m.
Of the remaining eight dogs:
- a female has two puppies that are still nursing and remain in foster care at this time
- a senior dog needed some extended medical care and is still recovering
- four other dogs were adopted by their foster families
