YORK, Pa. — There are many great auto mechanics in central Pennsylvania.
But, how do they make sure your car rides safely on the road?
FOX43's Tyler Hatfield went to Stouch's Auto Repair Shop in York to learn what it takes to work as an auto mechanic.
Tyler learned from Jeff Moyer, a service technician at Stouch's, about how to perform a courtesy check and change the oil and brakes for a customer.
"You got to get dirty some days," said Moyer. "It's not all pretty or glamour anymore.”
While there has been an increase in the amount of automotive technicians since 2020, the industry is still coming up short of workers to meet demand.
By 2027, the industry will need more than 600,000 automotive, diesel and collision technicians, according to a study by the Techforce Foundation.
“If you can handle some of the pressure of trying to help the customer out and making sure [the vehicle] leaves right, this could be a job for you,” said Moyer.
There are many technical schools and training centers to learn how to be an automotive technician.
