Introducing February's read | FOX43 Book Club

FOX43's Gabrielle Mediak and Lancaster Public Library's Theodore Griffiths introduced the next book featured in the FOX43 Book Club. The discussion will be Feb. 27.

YORK, Pa. — Welcome to a new month of the FOX43 Book Club!

We partner with local libraries to create a Book Club featuring authors from Pennsylvania, highlighting the stories of our surrounding communities.

Theodore Griffiths, adult services librarian/circulation supervisor at Lancaster Public Library, joined FOX43 Morning News anchor Gabrielle Mediak to introduce February's selection, "African Americans of Harrisburg" by John Weldon Scott, Eric Ledell Smith and The African American Museum of Harrisburg.

The authors chronicle Harrisburg's history as a stop on the Underground Railroad for slaves fleeing to freedom in the North. "African Americans of Harrisburg" explores the diverse community of wealthy, middle class and poor people of every possible race, religion, ethnicity and lifestyle in and around the city. The nonfiction read helps tell the story of how Pennsylvania's capital city became the melting pot it is today.

Both authors passed away in 2008, but their legacy lives on through their life's work.

Those who are interested in participating in the Book Club discussion on Feb. 27 can borrow the book from local libraries. A catalog search found copies in the Lebanon, Dauphin and Cumberland county library systems. It is also available to purchase from online retailers or independent booksellers.

Readers can also ask their preferred library to request the novel from Access PA, a statewide library resource sharing network.

If "African Americans of Harrisburg" doesn't get your fingers itching to turn pages, check out the video above for two other book recommendations from Griffiths.

We invite you to join Gabby and digital content producer Kayleigh Johnson for their Facebook Live discussion of "African Americans of Harrisburg" on Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. The Live will be hosted on the FOX43 Book Club's Facebook group.
