Humane Society of Harrisburg Area offers waived adoption fees to make room for Florida-based pets

Relocating homeless pets allows the sending shelters to focus on emergency response for local family pets displaced during the storm.
The animal shelter in St. Tammany Parish says they are bursting at the seams because they've taken in tons of dogs and cats since Hurricane Francine.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA) is joining Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) in preparing to make room for shelter animals fleeing storm-ravaged areas of the south, as a second historic hurricane bears down on Florida.

To make room for animals fleeing from devastation, the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area is offering waived adoption fees for all large adult dogs and cats through Oct. 16.

Each adoption offers space for animals in need.

BVSPCA is welcoming more than two dozen cats moved out of the path of Hurricane Milton from shelters in Florida to its West Chester Campus on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The cats were all available for adoption at southern shelters before moving out of the path of the storm.

Relocating homeless pets allows the sending shelters to focus on emergency response for local family pets displaced during the storm.

“We began getting ready as soon as we saw the devastation left in Helene’s wake, and Hurricane Milton’s potential path,” said Adam Lamb, HSHA & BVSPCA CEO. “Our shelters, like many across the country, have limited space, but we know our community can rally in times of crisis to support our specialized expertise in disaster response and allow us to answer the call to help more animals in need."
