YORK COUNTY, Pa. — A hometown hero is up for national recognition.

Detective K9 Briggs with Summit Search and Rescue in Lewisberry is in the running for the American Humane Hero Dog Awards. The annual, nationwide competition seeks to recognize ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things.

Briggs is part of the Law Enforcement and First Responder category. At just 11 months old, she made her first lifesaving find, locating a missing elderly man who had fallen in an abandoned quarry.

She also excels in tracking and detecting gunshot residue. Her notable achievements include aiding in the arrest of a burglary suspect, locating an endangered missing man and connecting a suspect to a series of arson cases, among many others.

K9 Briggs is among five hard-working canines up for the award. Additional categories to compete in include service and guide/hearing dogs, therapy dogs, military dogs and emerging hero and shelter dogs.

The winner of each category is honored at the star-studded American Humane Hero Dog Awards Gala in Palm Beach.
