HARRISBURG, Pa. — Earlier this year, Rutter's Children's Charities donated $50,000 to Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania. Now, this donation has been fully realized.
The donation from Rutter's went towards the Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania's development of Veterans Grove, a neighborhood of 15 tiny homes in south Harrisburg for homeless veterans struggling to transition to civilian life after their experiences in the military. Rutter's Children's Charities sponsored the 15th home. The homes are each colored red, brown or blue and are positioned in a heart-shaped cul-de-sac. At the center of the neighborhood is an American flag on top of a large star.
The neighborhood also includes a 6,000-foot community center for residents to socialize in as well as peer and counselor support.
"Advancing a unique therapeutic model, the goal is to provide veterans with not only shelter, but the comprehensive support and services they need to address the root causes of homelessness and regain their independence and sense of purpose," Rutter's Children's Charities wrote in a statement regarding the donation.
Many veterans have voiced their support for the creation of Veterans Grove on the Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania website, including retired Major General John Gronski.
"Our Veterans have made the sacrifice to support and defend our constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic," Gronski wrote in a statement on the organization's website. "They have done so by writing a blank check up to and payable with their very lives. It is now time we support Veterans experiencing homelessness who have fallen on tough times. That is what Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania is all about."
