Volunteer gives back to Franklin County Park | On the Bright Side

A Franklin County native continues to give back to a park that's given back to her.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. — Karen Moose has been going to Caledonia State Park since she was just a little girl.

"We would spend the whole day swimming," Moose explained.  "And, after we got [sun]burned, we would get into the creek and wait for our parents to pick us up."

From the water, to the greenery, Moose says the park holds many great memories for her.

And for the past 35 years, she has put her own time, money and efforts into its upkeep.

"Our main thing is cutting, splitting and hauling wood to the campgrounds," said Moose. "We sell firewood and then all the proceeds go back into buying things for the park."

The labor of love not only benefits the park, but also offers teens on probation, a way to do community service.

"I just find a soft spot for these kids," said Moose.

And she learned from her late grandma, to never let hard work go unnoticed.

"I've got my food all unloaded for the kids and I make lunch for them every day," said Moose.  "I know a lot of these kids don't get hot meals."

So after they work up an appetite volunteering, she treats them to a home-cooked dish, made with love.

Through selling the wood and other fundraisers, Moose and the 'Friends of Caledonia State Park' volunteers were able to add several additions to the park this summer, including custom grills, picnic tables, a revamped playground area, and tools to beautify the pool.

"We don't get anything out of this, just the satisfaction of keeping the park going," said Moose.

Her generosity extends beyond the park and out into her community.

Moose feeds and helps the homeless each Thanksgiving and even volunteers at a dog shelter.

But, she remains as humble as can be.

"I do a lot of things in memory of my grandma. This is how she would be," said Moose.  "She would always do for the neighbors who didn't have."
