Expert offers tips on how college students should organize

An expert provided tips on what to take to school and how to declutter for a successful start.

LANCASTER, Pa. — Many college students are packing their bags, as back to school season quickly approaches.

An expert provided tips on what to take to school and how to declutter for a successful start.

“With going back to school, you don’t want your college dorm room to look like your bedroom. So, you want to make sure you’re only bringing the essentials,” said Logan Pettinato, owner of Junk King Lancaster.

He also says it’s important to measure your space and bring enough clothing, bedding, technology and storage bins to get by.

He says everything else, including small valuable items, should be left at home. Items that haven’t been used in over six months should be thrown away.

“If you’re in a decluttered space, you’re not going to be fidgeting around while you’re trying to study and take online tests or get homework done. You’re going to be able to be more focused on the task at hand,” said Pettinato.

He says packing light and a few weeks early also takes stress off students and families because it makes the moving process quicker and easier.

Pettinato says it’s important to recycle items properly by sending them to a local junk removal company or a recycling center.

He says creating a pile of items you want and don’t want helps make decluttering easier. Although this is a necessary practice for some, Pettinato says it's important to not be wasteful.

“Those items that show light signs of wear and tear, there’s always a church, a donation center that could use those items to help families in need,” said Pettinato.
