PENNSYLVANIA, USA — With Halloween fast approaching, it won't be long before little superheroes, princesses and witches are roaming neighborhoods in search of candy.
There are a few things to keep in mind to help your kids stay safe this Halloween.
Troopers James Grothey, a public information officer with the Pennsylvania State Police, reminds parents to remember traffic laws.
"Stay on the sidewalks if possible; if not, stay as far right as possible," said Trooper Grothey. "Always cross at crosswalks; don't be crossing in the middle of the street."
Costumes are also a huge part of the holiday. Trooper Grothey recommends picking brightly colored costumes. If that's not possible, reflective tape can be added to the costumes or candy bag to make your child easier to see.
"As soon as the headlights from a car hit it, it's going to reflect brighter," explained Trooper Grothey.
Once the trick-or-treating is done, it's not a bad idea for you to check your child's candy.
"You want to make sure it's not old candy that someone has had for four years that they're just giving out, or make sure it's not punctured or open," said Trooper Grothey. "You want to make sure it's safe before your kids eat it."
It's not just the trick-or-treaters that need to be safe. Drivers should be aware of when their municipality is having trick-or-treating and use extra caution on the road.
