YORK, Pa. — A York hoagie shop recently went viral on social media for their overstuffed sandwiches—so viral, in fact, that Pittsburghers took a private plane across the Commonwealth just to get a taste.
Owner Mark Millek says the attention has been nothing like what Hefty Lefty’s Hoagies and Grinders has seen since they opened five years ago.
"It's been unbelievable," Millek said. "My business has doubled in the last eight weeks."
The madness began when a satisfied customer posted a photo of his meal on a hoagie enthusiast Facebook group. The loaded-down grinder caught the attention of sandwich aficionados everywhere.
Clearly, the shop's name speaks for itself.
"Well I knew the hoagies were going to be large, so I was thinking a word that would show how big the hoagies are," Millek said. "And to be honest, my whole life I've never had a nickname. So I thought 'this is my chance... man, I want to be known as Hefty Lefty.'"
In the video above, Millek demonstrates his perfected rolling technique that ensures all the fixings stay on the roll. He says Hefty Lefty's piles about a pound of meat and cheese on each sandwich.
"And that's loaded!" Sean Streicher, FOX43 Morning News anchor, enthusiastically confirmed. "I feel like I'll eat that and I'll be full for the next week and a half."
Anyone who wants a taste of Hefty Lefty's can stop by their stand in York Central Market Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The hoagie and grinder shop is open for business even on Wednesdays and Fridays when the market is closed.
