Cheap gas entices drivers to Pennsylvania pumps

The average price of gas in Scranton is $3.25 per gallon, more than 60 cents less than this time last year

SCRANTON, Pa. — Prices at the pump across the Electric City are on the decline, and drivers are noticing.

"Just drive by and see what is the cheapest. Oh, it's cheap there. Go back and spread the word around," said Cheech Gavalis of Jermyn.

According to GasBuddy, the average price of gas in Scranton has fallen by more than 8 cents per gallon in the last week, making the average cost per gallon $3.25.

But the lowest price we found in the city was $2.99 a gallon if you paid in cash.

Customers here at SV Mini Mart tell us that with the price of everything else going up, they take advantage of deals on gas.

"A lot of people drive around pickup trucks, and I know they cost more to run than my car. But where you can save a dime, save a dime," said Jackie Bonafede, a regular customer at the mini-mart along Main Avenue.

A stop in Lackawanna County that usually gets her the best bang for her buck and the most miles out of a full tank.

"The 87, it's not 88. It's 87. So that's got more octane, and it gives you a longer time to ride around on it," said Bonafede.

"Everywhere you go, it should be dropping down like that right now. I mean, this is the only place I see around. It's at $2.99," said Randy Merritt of Scranton.

He runs C. Gyr Lawn Care and goes through 250 gallons of gas per week.

While he knows the cheap prices won't be around forever,  Merritt hopes he can keep finding deals like this one around the city.

"I mean, some people are going down. Some people aren't. So hopefully, we see it a lot, dropping," said Merritt.
