Anonymous donor gifts adaptive bike to paralyzed 8-year-old in Dauphin County

Laykin was paralyzed during a February crash in Schuylkill County that killed her grandmother and injured her six-year-old cousin.

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — A young girl received a special surprise on Tuesday, with the help of Penn State Health Rehabilitation Hospital

Hospital staff surprised 8-year-old Laykin Ryan with a brand-new adaptive bike.

Laykin was paralyzed during a February crash in Schuylkill County that killed her grandmother and injured her six-year-old cousin.

Hospital staff members hope the new bike will allow Laykin to enjoy her favorite activities despite her physical limitations.

Laykin's dad says he knows this is a special gesture.

"It means the world to [her]," said John Ryan, Laykin's dad. "From the beginning, we knew she had to be back on a bike, and she was fortunate enough to get that bike. She's looking forward to being back out in the neighborhood with all of her friends and just having fun being a kid."

The hospital says the bike was generously funded by an anonymous donor foundation.
