York social worker opens consignment shop | On the Bright Side

The concept behind 'Once Upon a Child' is for gently used kids clothing to be re-used by someone else, rather than thrown into a landfill.

YORK, Pa. — Kehinde Adeniyi has filled these racks from top to bottom with kids' clothing.

As a mother herself, she knows shopping for kids can add up.

The immigrant from Nigeria has also served children and families in York County as a social worker for the past 16 years.

"I enjoy talking with people, but I also love helping people in the process and seeing the change," said Adeniyi.

But after the pandemic, she was ready for a new challenge.

"Something that would still serve children and family, which is my passion. And that would also bless the community. So then I fell in love with Once Upon a Child," said Adeniyi.

She opened up the consignment shop on Greensprings Drive after falling in love with its mission.

"We cater to children and families so that your pocket doesn't have to hurt," she said.

The concept behind Once Upon a Child is for gently used kids' clothing, accessories and toys to be re-used by someone else, rather than thrown into a landfill.

"Being a parent, I'm always thinking about dressing my three boys and providing them with the books, shoes, the items that they need, without breaking my bank," said Adeniyi. "And I know if I’m thinking like that, so many other families are thinking like that."

She says Once Upon A Child helps parents find good deals in this economy, while also allowing them to sell in a sustainable way.

And she's excited to bring it to the York community.

"I think I'm incorporating both my mom skill and my social work skills into making this happen, and I'm excited about the whole package," she said.
