Pumpkin Patch Project helps kids feel comfortable with eye disorder

Truffles and her owner Danielle are asking families to put an eye patch on one of their decorated pumpkins to help spread awareness for amblyopia.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — A glasses-wearing cat in Cumberland County continues to spread awareness for vision disorders through the Pumpkin Patch Project.

Truffles and her owner Danielle Crull, master optician at A Child's Eye in Mechanicsburg, are asking families to put an eye patch on one of their decorated pumpkins to help spread awareness for amblyopia, also known as "Lazy Eye."

An eye patch is the most common treatment for the disorder, and the Pumpkin Patch Project—along with support from Truffles as the "ambassador of fur vision" —helps kids cope with their vision challenges.

"Seeing an eye patch and not thinking, 'oh what's wrong?' but knowing, you know, what they're going through and then congratulating them and letting them know that they're doing a good job or how proud you are of them," Danielle Crull, master optician, said. "Truffles is all about recognizing the effort that kids go through and empowering them to continue to do that, and that's really where Truffles shines."

Truffles is asking families to submit photos of their eye patch pumpkins to win prizes, including a Truffles Prize pack! To enter, post a picture of your patched pumpkin on facebook and tag @truffles_the_kitty and use #pumpkinpatchproject.

The next round of winners will be picked on Halloween, which is this Thursday.
