COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, PA — Operation Santa Claus is a holiday mission the people here at the Tobyhanna Army Depot in Coolbaugh Township have hosted every Christmas.
The more than 50-year-old tradition brings local kids with mental and physical disabilities to celebrate Christmas in a special way.
"Operation Santa Claus gives you a great feeling. It helps so many kids that otherwise wouldn't have a chance to go anywhere. I have fun they get to see the characters and dance," said the president of Operation Santa Claus, Rose Gesell.
This is the first year the event is back since the coronavirus pandemic.
Nearly 150 kids had the chance to meet with Santa, enjoy music, dancing with characters and arts and crafts. While smaller than past years, North Pocono School District is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the special day.
"I got the email in August that said we're going to hold some spots for you, and we were like so excited to be here, and the kids especially, they really get a lot out of this. The characters that walk around and it’s just it's for them, and they know it, so it makes him feel so good," said Sue Jacobs from North Pocono School District.
"It's always nice to give back during the holiday season and especially when you can do it in your own community," said Staff Sergeant from the U.S. Army, John Hogan.
Rose Geselle is the president of Operation Santa Claus. She says the celebration is close to her heart.
"I've been doing it ever since I started at the Depot, I was 20 and I've been doing it for 46 years now, so and it just makes you feel great. The kids love it, and some of them don't really know they're here, but they still enjoy the day out. "
