HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Shapiro administration emphasized important safety tips ahead of the Fourth of July week at Codorus State Park.
While many Americans are preparing to grill, camp out, or go to the beach, officials wanted the public to know a few things about firework safety.
"If you look around and think, 'Boy, that could go badly,' stop. Don't do it," said John "J.C." Tedorski, the deputy state fire commissioner.
Keystone Fireworks opened a new location in Dauphin County with sales that offer customers to buy one item and get the other at $9.99.
Salespeople are anticipating more people to come in not only because of the deal but also because it’s the busiest time of year for them, despite being open year-round.
They are ensuring that rules, safety, and laws are enforced.
"Safety, while it may seem tedious, is essential to keeping it fun," said Declan Fledderjohn. "In the state of Pennsylvania, you have to be 18 years or older. We check IDs for everyone, and we don’t encourage sales to anyone under the age of 18."
Things to keep in mind:
- Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting the firework.
- Don't try to relight or pick up a firework that hasn't fully ignited.
- Never point or throw fireworks at someone else.
- Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
- Light them off one at a time.
- Never carry fireworks in a pocket.
- Never shoot them off in a metal or glass container.
- Never let children play with or ignite fireworks.
- Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities.
