American Red Cross gives trick-or-treat safety tips ahead of Halloween

The American Red Cross is sharing trick-or-treat safety tips for families to ensure they have a fun—but not scary—Halloween.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Halloween is this Thursday, which means we will soon see kids out in costumes taking part in trick-or-treat fun.

But the American Red Cross wants to make sure families are staying safe during the spooky holiday.

This safety starts with the costumes. The American Red Cross encourages the use of face make-up instead of masks because masks can make seeing difficult. They also urge families to stay away from costumes that have long-trailing fabric.

Reflective tape could be added to your kids' costumes and trick-or-treat bags because it can make them more visible.

Executive director of the American Red Cross Central Pennsylvania Chapter, Laura Burke, says it's important parents make a plan with their kids ahead of time.

“Trick or treating is one of the most exciting days of the year for the kiddos. They love to get out, put their costumes on, and go door to door,” Burke said. "Having these conversations in advance will alleviate any stress on the parents and the children and make it a more enjoyable experience."

Carrying a flashlight can also make it easier for kids to see where they're going and be seen by drivers.

The American Red Cross urges trick-or-treaters to only visit homes that have a porch light on and only accept treats at the door—never go inside!

Those treats should be checked by parents or guardians before they are eaten to make sure there aren't any loose candies, open packages or choking hazards.

If you are giving out treats on Halloween, make sure to light the area well so young visitors can see, and clear your front yard of any hazards or obstacles.

Also, if you are driving, be extra cautious of kids crossing the street.
