The Pennsylvania Bakery celebrates St. Patrick's Day with traditional Irish soda bread

The traditional Irish bread is leavened with baking soda (hence the name) as opposed to a typical bread that uses yeast.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Bakery is busy whipping up delicious eats for St. Patrick's Day and Pi Day.

One of the traditional treats headed to the oven is Irish soda bread. The bread is leavened with baking soda (hence the name) as opposed to a typical bread that uses yeast.

"It has more of like a buttery, crumbly texture to it when it's finished compared to like a white bread or sourdough bread that you might get," Dresdon Rohrer, head baker at The Pennsylvania Bakery, said.

He describes the texture as similar to a scone and says it is a tougher dough but one that is also easy to mix by hand.

The bread has been made in Ireland since the 1800s.

It will be stocked at The Pennsylvania Bakery through St. Patrick's Day and the weekend in both traditional one-pound loaves and mini loaves.

The bakery is also piled high with pies for National Pi Day.

The Pennsylvania Bakery is located at 1713 Market St. in Camp Hill. It is open Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
