Introducing December's read | FOX43 Book Club

FOX43's Gabrielle Mediak and Lancaster Public Library's Theodore Griffiths introduced the next book featured in the FOX43 Book Club. The discussion will be Dec. 28.

YORK, Pa. — Welcome to a new month of the FOX43 Book Club!

We partner with local libraries to create a Book Club featuring authors from Pennsylvania, highlighting the stories of our surrounding communities.

Theodore Griffiths, adult services librarian/circulation supervisor at Lancaster Public Library, joined FOX43 Morning News anchor Gabrielle Mediak to introduce December's selection, "Out in Central Pennsylvania: The History of an LGBTQ Community" by William Burton with Barry Loveland.

Published in June 2020, "Out in Central Pennsylvania" highlights the efforts of LGBTQ+ individuals and organizations in the area to demand civil rights, improve their quality of life and be accepted in the community. Covering the 1960s to today, the book focuses on movements in the rural areas, small cities and towns that make up the heart of Pennsylvania. Using oral histories, photos and archives, the account details personal struggles and discrimination, as well as how LGBTQ+ communities can form and thrive outside of large cities.

Those who are interested in participating in the Book Club discussion on Dec. 28 can borrow the book from local libraries. A catalog search found copies in the York, Lancaster, Lebanon, Adams, Dauphin, Perry and Juniata county library systems as a hard copy or ebook. It is also available to purchase from Penn State University Press, Amazon, LancasterHistory and many other online retailers or independent booksellers.

Readers can also ask their preferred library to request the novel from Access PA, a statewide library resource sharing network.

If "Out in Central Pennsylvania" doesn't get your fingers itching to turn pages, check out the video above for two other book recommendations from Griffiths.

We invite you to join Gabby and digital content producer Kayleigh Johnson for their Facebook Live discussion of "Out in Central Pennsylvania: The History of an LGBTQ Community" on Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. The Live will be hosted on the FOX43 Book Club's Facebook group.
