NEW FREEDOM, Pa. — Meet Denver! He’s a 5-month-old Border Collie mix who was rescued from a puppy mill last month by Animal Rescue Inc. Denver, and four of his siblings, are now spending their time playing in the yard and learning how to be a dog.
“Learning, just learning to be a dog. He’s super friendly, gentle, but playful. Gets along with everybody; dogs, kids, adults," said Teresa Fernandez, rescue coordinator.
Fernandez says they’ve seen an uptick in puppy mill rescues this summer.
“We have quite a few, that’s kind of been our theme lately, rescuing all of these puppy mill dogs. Some adults that have been breeding and breeding and some puppies that just didn’t make it through the process there of selling them. We rescue them quickly before they disappear," she said.
Denver arrived to the rescue with his siblings Dallas, Jackson, Savannah and Bethany.
These dogs will all make great companions to a home ready for the challenge.
“It’s definitely a lot of work if you get a puppy. So you’ve gotta be ready for it," Fernandez told FOX43. "Ready for training. Ready for obedience. But then again, they are smart, so if you’re ready to take on the challenge, we have lots of puppies.”
Denver enjoys playing outside in the yard and relaxing in the shade when it starts to get too hot.
He has beautiful black fur and is ready for his family to come and pick him up.
“They need a chance, a chance to be a real dog and just be loved," says Fernandez.
