Mystery dog respiratory illness: Signs and symptoms, where the illness has been reported

The canine respiratory illness has been reported either officially or anecdotally in 14 states, including Maryland.

MARYLAND, USA — Veterinary officials are warning pet owners across the country of a mysterious illness spreading among dogs in multiple states. As of this week, that list of states includes Maryland.

Veterinary laboratories in several states have been investigating the illness which has caused, in some cases, lasting respiratory diseases and pneumonia that do not respond to antibiotics. Some cases of pneumonia progress quickly, making dogs very sick within 24 to 36 hours.

Where has the mystery illness been found?

The canine respiratory illness has been reported either officially or anecdotally in 14 states, according to American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) president and veterinarian Rena Carlson:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Washington

Signs and symptoms

According to the Cornell University Richard P. Riney Canine Health Center, the highly contagious infection has symptoms similar to kennel cough.

Common signs of canine respiratory illness include:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Labored breathing
  • Nose or eye discharge
  • Lethargy
  • Decreased appetite

Officials with the Oregon Department of Agriculture say the reported cases of the respiratory illness have resulted in chronic mild to moderate inflammation of the trachea that lasts for 6-8 weeks or longer and is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics; chronic pneumonia that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics; or acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and “often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24-36 hours.”

How to protect your pet

The Oregon Department of Agriculture released a list of precautions for dog owners to take into account to help protect their furry friends:

  • Vaccinate your dog as recommended by your veterinarian. This may include vaccinations for canine influenza, Bordetella, and parainfluenza
  • Avoid communal water bowls and toys, and clean these items thoroughly
  • Avoid playdates with unknown dogs. Socialization is important for your dog, so you might consider creating a playgroup of known dogs that are also vaccinated
  • Avoid or limit your dog's exposure to settings with unknown dogs, such as off-leash dog parks
  • If your dog is sick, please keep them at home and seek veterinary care
