YORK, Pa. — Today marks National Cat Day, a time to raise awareness about cat overpopulation and find a way to combat the issue.
One way to help is by adopting your own feline friend from a rescue like Heavenly Paws Animal Shelter.
Garfield and Bubbles are just two of the sweet kitties waiting at the shelter to find their "furr"-ever homes.
Garfield is the 634 cat Heavenly Paws has rescued this year. He came from a hoarding situation and is FIV positive, meaning his immune system is weakened, but is otherwise healthy, neutered, vaccinated and ready to be adopted.
"He's 8 years old, but he still can bring out his inner kitten," Sharon Wood, volunteer, said. "If you provide him a little tiny bit of catnip, he's right there."
Bubbles the kitten was rescued from under a shed when she was just 3 weeks old. She was the runt of her seven-kitten litter, weighing in at just five ounces while her siblings weighed about 1.5 pounds.
"So Bubbles needed some special care," Louise Keiter, the volunteer who rescued Bubbles, said. "I took her home, and I took two of her sisters to keep her company. And they became the Powerpuff Girls."
After three months of back and forth progress, syringe feeding and intensive care, Bubbles now weighs a little over a healthy two-and-a-half pounds.
Those interested in adding a furry friend to their life can browse available cats and fill out an adoption application online.
