Doggie Delight owner reflects one year after Broad Street Market fire, three years after his own fire

Reflecting on the past year since the fire at Broad Street Market and the three years of his own fire, the owner of Doggie Delight shares his journey and experiences

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The fire that damaged part of the Broad Street Market was truly heart-wrenching for many, especially for one small business owner who had experienced a similar loss before.

Donnie Farner, the owner of Doggie Delights, had already seen his business suffer when his barn burned down with all his supplies inside, just two years before the fire at Broad Street Market.

“Even though we’re here the fight is not over yet,” said Farner.

Both Donnie and his wife were devastated and had to start from scratch once again to rebuild their business. After they managed to get back on their feet, they expanded their business by moving into one of the buildings at Broad Street Market. However, when another fire destroyed their hard work and passion, it was a devastating blow.

“When we pulled up, it was just devastating and brought back horrible memories from two years before,” said Farner.

Understanding the challenges of rebuilding, Donnie found ways to ensure that the business didn't lose customers or inventory. They salvaged whatever they could from the market, including their sign, treats, and even a charred barrel that holds treats.

“You can look back at that and say things are better than they were a year ago so that’s that’s why we look at it every time we’re in here and thank the good Lord that we’re in here,” said Farner.

The journey has been incredibly tough for Donnie. They had to relocate employees to other shops, increase their delivery services, and even transition to wholesale to continue making a profit. Donnie mentioned they were doing everything possible to ensure the survival of their business because many others in the market had closed down.

“I mean it’s heartbreaking, every week is a struggle to remain open,” said Farner.

On May 23rd, a temporary tent housing eight businesses, including Doggie Delights, had a soft opening at the Broad Street Market. Although Donnie is thankful to still have a business in Midtown, he mentioned that business hasn't been the same, and they're just trying to survive until the new Broad Street Market building is constructed.

“All of us here are just trying to get to the new building over there,” said Farner. "We’re still recovering as far as customers.”

Almost a year later since the fire tore through the market, businesses, and what many called a community hub, Donnie emphasized the importance of staying positive and finding ways to keep moving forward.

"Try to remain positive and learn how to pivot don’t be. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” said Farner.
