Small farms shine at the York State Fair

Paradise View Farm, based out of Thomasville, Pennsylvania, is one of the many farms making a significant impact on the fair.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — As the York State Fair enters its final days, small farms have emerged as a notable highlight, alongside the traditional attractions of animals, food, and concerts.

Paradise View Farm, based out of Thomasville, Pennsylvania, is one of the many farms making a significant impact on the fair.

"Lots of planning of the organized chaos," said Sarah Sparks, the owner of Paradise View Farm, reflecting on the demanding yet rewarding experience of being part of the fair.

The fair has brought together family, fun, and education for everyone involved. According to Sawyer Sparks, son of Sarah, the connections made at the fair are invaluable. "Probably everybody I meet and all the friends I make," he said.

The impact of the fair extends beyond enjoyment, with Kathryn and Hayden Sparks securing victories in various animal shows. "I won reserve champion overall for bred, known female," said Hayden Sparks, while Kathryn expressed her achievements by stating, "So I want supreme champion heifer yesterday with my heifer Sadie, and then I’m gonna be selling a goat tonight."

In addition to showcasing their animals, the Sparks family is proud to highlight their farming heritage. "Our family has been farming since its origin,” mentioned Sarah.

The Sparks siblings, Kathryn, Hayden, Sawyer, and their baby brother represent the fifth generation of Paradise Farm, emphasizing a longstanding commitment to agriculture.

The family's dedication to farming is underscored by their desire to spotlight the hardworking individuals in the agriculture industry. "Some days it feels like there’s not enough hours in the day...It can be a lot of work," shared Kathryn, reflecting on the challenges they face.

Moreover, the Sparks family aims to raise awareness about the vital role small farms play in providing food for the nation. "Right now, in the United States, only about 2% of America is a farm family and those farm families are feeding our entire country," highlighted Sarah.

The fair serves as a platform to educate the public about the efforts and significance of small farms. "It’s really important that we encourage our youth to develop a love for agriculture so that they can continue to feed our nation," emphasized Sarah, underlining the importance of promoting agricultural awareness among the younger generation.

For those attending the fair, a visit to the small farms is encouraged.

"Sometimes it gives other farms a chance because there are bigger farms that are more recognized, but if you’re small like us, then we have a chance sometimes to get recognized for hard work and dedication," affirmed Kathryn.

As the York State Fair draws to a close, the contributions of small farms and the dedication of families such as the Sparks serve as a reminder of the essential role played by these farms in our communities.

The fair not only provides entertainment but also educates attendees about the efforts and significance of small farms. Their hard work and dedication are an integral part of our agricultural landscape, providing a glimpse into the life and contributions of these invaluable members of our society.
