HARRISBURG, Pa. — It’s tough times for the Broad Street Market in Harrisburg, which has struggled financially since a devastating fire destroyed its historic brick building in July.
“It was really tragic. I think everyone felt that way," said Brittany Brock, treasurer of the William Penn Social Association.
The bar and social club is located down the street from the market and is stepping up to help its neighbor in a big way.
“We had the last half of our yearly donation proceeds that we needed to allocate, who to donate to and the board decided unanimously the best thing we could do is make a meaningful donation [to the market]," explained Brock.
That donation, totaling $30,000, will be presented to the market later this week.
It’ll go towards general upkeep and operational expenses.
“It’s coming at a great time and I want to reiterate something that has been said multiple times and that is the market will not be closing," said Matt Maisel, director of communications for the City of Harrisburg.
“As a resident of the city for over 10 years, I’m really excited to do it because the market has been one of my favorite places to go since I moved here," said Brock.
Meanwhile, the city is still working to get plumbing and electrical work done inside of the temporary structure.
The city has approved a contract for an electrician and bids for plumbing are due Thursday night.
The city has also deferred trash payments for the market to help ease its financial struggles.
“Anything we can do to help keep the doors open and the lights on we’re going to do," said Maisel.
