Adams County nonprofit offers free equine therapy for veterans

After two years of preparing, an Adams County couple is ready to provide free equine therapy for veterans.

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. — It was 2022 when Heather and Mike Semies bought their property in Butler Township.

Coming from veteran families, the couple knew immediately what they wanted to do with the property’s 25 acres.

That’s how Willow Rock Horse Farm transformed into the nonprofit Willow Rock Warriors.

“I’m a lifelong horse person and recognize the power of equine presence in the world," said Heather. "It grounds me for sure, so we kind of combined our passions to [found] Willow Rock Warriors and provide free equine assistive therapy for veterans, first responders and their families.”

Veterans will have the opportunity to participate in ground therapy, which is part of the EAGALA model of standards.

Rather than ride the horses, veterans will perform routine tasks, such as brushing and cleaning.

Equine therapist Stephanie Wolfe is a pivotal part of the program.

"It's an experiential type of therapy where they can discover their selves," Wolfe described. "It's nonverbal because horses give that nonverbal communication so it's a great way for them to connect in a different way than traditional talk therapy."

Vietnam veteran Mike Turner says equine therapy helped fill the void left behind after the death of his service dog.

“The biggest thing that has to be done is the connection between the veteran and the animal, whether it is a service dog or a horse,” Turner said.

Turner’s horse, Reba, is expected to board the farm.

She’s helped Turner through his therapy journey for years and is now anticipated to help other veterans like him.

“They’re willing to give back, and want to give back, it’s huge. We’re one big family here and when you come on board you know there’s going to be some sort of public service that you’re going to be doing,” Mike Semies said.

The nonprofit has twelve registered volunteers so far but always has room for more. At least a dozen horses also call the farm their home.

The nonprofit is expected to have its next event in early August.
