YORK, Pa. — Give Local York, a day of philanthropy designed to support the nonprofits helping people right in your own community, will take place from May 2 to 3.
As the event draws nearer, FOX43 will highlight some of the nonprofits that will benefit from the donations.
Caring Ministry at First Presbyterian Church of York, located at 225 East Market Street in York, is one of those organizations.
The Ministry provides a number of services to anyone in the York community who is in need, including a food pantry, bus passes for new jobs, utility bill relief, prescription assistance, community meals, clothing giveaways and more. If there is something Caring Ministry is unable to help with, the organization also acts as a referral agency to connect people with local organizations that may be able to address that need.
"Whether they visit our babies room and are receiving those diapers, wipes and clothing, or on the food shelves, they are coming to us in a time of need, and we are able to help them, lifting their spirits physically, emotionally, mentally, and it really makes them, or allows them, to focus on their family or other things in their life and not just the food," Elizabeth Lauer, director of the Ministry, said.
Caring Ministry helps about 200 households representing 700-800 individuals each month just with food assistance, Lauer said.
"Families are coming to us saying that their shelves are empty," Lauer said. "And once they experience our time shopping through our pantry, they're able to fill their shelves."
Those who would like to support the Ministry but can't make a monetary donation are invited to volunteer in a number of positions, including administrative work, food pickup/delivery driving, helping in the pantry and much more.
