Food truck owner retiring after 12 years of serving at Hellam Carnival

Dan Gift, the owner of Dan’s Cooking Can, has been a familiar face at the Hellam Carnival for the past 12 years, but this year will mark his final appearance.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Dan Gift, the owner of Dan’s Cooking Can, has been a familiar face at the Hellam Carnival for the past 12 years, but this year will mark his final appearance.

Gift, known for his crab, mac & cheese, and homemade crab cakes, has decided to retire and slow down after many years of serving the community.

"This will be my last year. I'm slowing down and retiring," said Gift, reflecting on his decision to step back from the business. Over the years, Gift has garnered a loyal following, with people returning to the carnival specifically for his renowned dishes.

The Hellam Carnival, known for attracting individuals of all ages, provides a sense of community and nostalgia for many attendees.

"It's about community, getting to see folks grow up. I live right across the street [from here] growing up," Gift expressed, said Gift.

Gift's decision to retire has left many carnival-goers reflecting on the memories and connections formed over the years. His presence and delicious food have become a staple at the fair, and his absence will surely be felt next year.

While Gift prepares to say goodbye, one local sports team is getting ready to make a splash by offering an exciting dunk tank experience. The Golden Knights Football Parents Association, for the first time, will be participating in the carnival to raise funds for the team.

Molly Cook, a secretary of the Golden Knights Football Parents Association, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming event.

"We decided to invite members of the community to come and participate in the games, and even have the opportunity to dunk some of our team members," said Cook.

The funds raised from this initiative will go directly towards supporting the football team. With 40 to 50 players relying on the generosity of the community, the money raised will be used to provide essential resources such as meals and equipment.

"The proceeds from the event will help feed our hungry boys and cover the costs of everything they need during the season," added Cook.

By actively engaging in the carnival, the Golden Knights Football Parents Association aims to not only raise funds but also to create a stronger bond with the local community. This initiative is a testament to their commitment to the well-being and success of the team and also serves as an opportunity for the community to show their support for the local athletes.
