Hellam Carnival brings community together through sports

The Eastern York Golden Knights turned a carnival booth into a fundraising opportunity for the football team.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The Hellam Recreation Commission Carnival returned to York County Wednesday, but for some booths, the event means more than just fun rides and fried food.

It was a test of accuracy for the Eastern York Golden Knights, who set up a dunk tank booth at the carnival to raise money for their football team this year.

Cole Staker, defensive end for the Golden Knights, said, “It just helps pay for equipment, feed the team. You know we’re a football team, we eat a lot of food."

A cost which can add up quickly when you're feeding 45 young athletes before a game. According to Molly Cook, secretary for the Golden Knights Football Parent's Association, the money raised also helps the team give back to the school.

Cook said, “We also do kind of the extras, the coaches need an extra headset or practice jerseys are needed; things that can benefit the school also.”

As Eastern York School District students return to school on Thursday, teamwork is coming into play to keep the booth running.

“I know Friday our football team can't do any of this because we have a game, but we got some other athletic teams to take part too,” said Staker.

Which his mother, Lisa Staker, says has helped build a stronger community. Lisa said, “We support each other at everything. All the sports, all the activities; I would say that's one of the best things about East York.”

This is the first year the team has participated in the carnival, which Cook says has been successful so far. The Golden Knights dunk tank fundraiser will be available until the carnival closes on Saturday.
