HARRISBURG, Pa. — All is quiet at Harrisburg’s Jackson Lick Pool, but on Wednesday that will change, as it opens for the summer.
“This pool has been around for over 60 years and it holds great sentimental value," said Harrisburg's mayor, Wanda Williams, on Tuesday.
The pool underwent thousands of dollars in renovations, forcing the city to delay the opening.
“I wanted to have it open by Memorial Day but we couldn’t do it, we had to make sure we had all the repairs done before we opened for the public," explained Mayor Williams.
The pool now has a fresh coat of paint and the concession stand and restrooms have been upgraded.
“We just wanted to get the pool up to the standard where people could like take a look and be proud of a facet of their community," said Chris Egbert, administrative assistant for the city's Parks & Recreation Department.
Jackson Lick is expected to see a significant increase in attendance, as the city’s Hall Manor pool remains closed to the public due to a sinkhole.
“As I understand, there’s a sinkhole underneath the pool and we don’t want the deep end turning into a bottomless end," said Egbert.
With 15 lifeguards, the city says it’s fully staffed and ready to handle the crowds.
Mayor Williams says it's a welcome change from last year when getting lifeguards certified was more of a challenge.
Admission to the pool is also staying affordable. It’s $4 for adults and $2 for kids per day.
“If we have to put in a little more money to eat extra costs to keep it affordable, we see that as a worthy trade," said Egbert.
The Jackson Lick Pool is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. throughout the summer.
