Law enforcement prepares for former President Donald Trump's visit to Harrisburg

Wednesday's visit will be former President Trump's first back to Pennsylvania since the July 13 assassination attempt in Butler County.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Former President Donald Trump is set to visit Harrisburg on Wednesday.

It will be his first trip back to Pennsylvania, since the attempted assassination of his life in Butler County on July 13.

The security failure at the Butler Township rally resulted in Corey Comperatore's death and injuries to three other men, including Trump.

It has also put law enforcement under the microscope, ahead of Wednesday’s rally inside the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex.

“You’re going to have Secret Service overseeing everything, after that, it becomes a Pennsylvania State Police detail and because the farm show is a state-owned building, [Pennsylvania] Capitol Police are involved as well," said Matt Maisel, director of communications for the City of Harrisburg.

Maisel says Harrisburg police are fourth in the hierarchy and will be solely responsible for traffic control.

“This is one of those instances where we just have to follow what Secret Service entails," said Maisel.

As with any large event, he says city police are ready to respond in the event something goes wrong.

“Harrisburg police are very familiar with the lay of the land [at the Farm Show Complex], so to speak, you need to be," Maisel explained. "You need to be familiar with where traffic is coming from, you have to keep all eyes open at all times. They are very well trained to be able to handle a situation like this.”

Maisel confirmed Monday that city police have been on multiple calls with Secret Service and other law enforcement partners regarding the visit by the former president since it was announced last week.

In a statement to FOX43, Michael R. Centrella, Secret Agent in Charge at the U.S. Secret Service's Philadelphia field office, said in regards to Wednesday's event: “The safety and security of our protectees is the U.S. Secret Service’s top priority. Out of concern for operational security, the Secret Service does not discuss the means and methods used for our protective operations.”

Pennsylvania Capitol Police also provided the following statement: "The Capitol Police work in close coordination with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to provide the Harrisburg community with a coordinated public safety presence that keeps employees and visitors in Commonwealth facilities safe and secure."

FOX43 reached out to the Pennsylvania State Police as well, who deferred questions to the Secret Service.

Former President Trump is scheduled to take the stage in the New Holland Arena at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Doors will open at 2 p.m.
