YORK, Pa. — A hobby for some, a career for others, photography is all about capturing a moment in time.
"Photo and video, to me, just is an expression of what I feel inward and being able to translate that into something that the world can understand," said Austin Gingerich.
As people struggled in the wake of 2020, Gingerich formed a like-minded community.
"We want to come together and bring all these people that are siloed off together into a space where they can collaborate on things," said Gingerich.
Silo is a collective of photographers, models and entrepreneurs who share a common goal of valuing friendship over competition.
What was once a group of six people has grown into more than 3,000 active members. They host quarterly groups called "Silo Captures" where nearly 100 people network and create spontaneous art.
Rylie Matson is a new member of Silo and says her confidence on camera has sharpened since joining.
"You guys work together. You create teams, you create a family," said Matson.
Business owners are getting in on the fun, too.
The owner of Revolt Style Studio, Jessica Weikert, brings her inventory to Silo events, allowing models to have a change of clothing.
"Going out into the community, doing events, working with people, collaborating on products has been where I found the most success in the business and also where I've gotten a lot of, like, fuel for my own creativity," said Weikert.
Silo is bringing its biggest event yet to WellSpan Park on Nov. 18.
Organizers say with more than 3 million festive lights for an upcoming fundraiser, it's sure to be an afternoon filled with joy and inspiration.
"It's all because of the community, and they're continuing to show up," said Gingerich.
The Silo event is free and open to the public. It will take place from from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 18.
