Caring for people with disabilities | Give Local York

Shadowfax is a human services agency that provides support and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities and autism.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Give Local York, a day of philanthropy designed to support the nonprofits helping people right in your own community, will take place from May 2 to 3.

As the event draws nearer, FOX43 will highlight some of the nonprofits that will benefit from the donations.

Shadowfax is one of those organizations.

The nonprofit was founded in 1985 and provides support and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities and autism.

Shadowfax currently runs 20 residential programs with nearly 60 people, day programs that offer support via employment, volunteerism and life skills training, and much more.

"At Shadowfax, we believe in the principles of everyday lives," Amy Brillinger, CEO, said. "So it is a right for all people to live, work and play within their communities, that people deserve to engage in meaningful activities within their communities that provide them with a sense of purpose and essentially all individuals deserve to feel included and that sense of belonging within the communities where they live."

Donations from Give Local York will go towards purchasing smartphones, health trackers and other technology that can be used to help increase someone's independence.

Those who would like to support the nonprofit but can't donate are invited to volunteer in a number of positions. Those who are interested in becoming a volunteer can contact the organization here.
