YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Communities across the U.S. are coming together to help the millions of people impacted by Hurricane Helene.
That includes in York County, where one company is seeing first-hand just how many people are willing to help.
McGrew Equipment Company, a full-service farm vehicle and equipment auction company based in North Codorus Township, started collecting donations earlier this week.
“When we started we were just hoping to get a truckload, I had no idea what it would turn into," said Zachary Innerst, McGrew's general manager.
Wes Garvick of Littlestown made his second stop of the week on Thursday.
“I saw the opportunity to be of service, something hit my heart with this one, and I had the ability to do it," he said. “My first truckload I came in and said ‘Hey what are you guys lacking and what do you need?’ and they said the baby supplies and that just really pushed me to work harder.”
From baby formula and diapers to food and water, McGrew has already sent two trucks full of supplies down south to help victims of the storm.
"It’s one car after another, it’s awesome to see people coming together to help people they don’t even know," said Innerst.
“I have friends down there, I have friends that are on foot working so there’s a lot of emotions," added Garvick. "This is a really bad situation.”
It's a situation that these folks are hoping to help make a little more bearable.
“It’s hard to even wrap your head around it," said Innerst. "I can’t imagine what those people are going through. This is just a drop in the bucket of what they need but any little bit helps so we’re just happy to help.”
They plan to continue the donation drive for the foreseeable future.
“We’re just going until people stop bringing it," Innerst said.
McGrew employees will be collecting donations at their headquarters, located at 2191 Seven Valleys Road, Seven Valleys on Thursday, Oct. 3 until 7 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
They will also be there on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Donation drop-offs will pause on Monday and Tuesday at the Seven Valleys location due to a vehicle auction. They will resume on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Donations are also being accepted at three other locations listed in the below Facebook post.
Anyone interested in making donations should keep an eye on the McGrew Equipment Company Facebook page for updates.
The company is also collecting hay and feed for farmers located in areas affected by Hurricane Helene.
