YORK, Pa. — A York County woman was driving under the influence of drugs when she crashed her car into a tree Saturday night, severely injuring three young passengers, Springettsbury Township Police claim in charging documents.

Kayla Denise Schroeder, 25, of Cockeysville, is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, endangering the welfare of children, multiple counts of DUI, and a summary traffic violation in connection to the alleged incident, which police say occurred around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the 3300 block of Deininger Road.

According to police, Schroeder was also severely injured in the crash. The three injured passengers were ages 11, 7 and 9-months=old.

The 9-month-old suffered broken vertebrae, broken ribs, collapsed lungs, a lacerated liver, and had fluid around her heart, according to police. The 7-year-old had a lacerated stomach, which caused her stomach contents to spill inside her abdomen, requiring surgery to repair, police said.

Both children were transferred to Hershey Medical Center for further treatment.

The 11-year-old suffered a head injury and was released from the hospital that night, according to police.

Police say Schroeder was the operator of the vehicle. She allegedly exhibited signs of intoxication, and officers detected the odor of alcohol on her, according to the complaint.

Schroeder allegedly told police she was leaving a birthday party at Rocky Ridge County Park prior to the crash. She also allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana and consuming two alcoholic beverages a few hours earlier, police said.

Officers administered a Field Sobriety Test, and Schroeder allegedly performed poorly, according to the complaint.

She was then placed under arrest. She was taken to York Hospital, where she allegedly submitted to a blood draw.
