Police warn of suspects using phony 'motion picture' money to make purchases in southern York County

The movie prop cash is designed to look like the real thing, according to Southern Regional Police. Businesses are reminded to use counterfeit markers on big bills.

NEW FREEDOM, Pa. — Police in York County are investigating a series of incidents where suspects are passing off phony $100 bills as the real thing.

According to Southern Regional Police, there have been multiple reports of suspects using "motion picture" money -- movie prop cash designed to look like the real thing -- to make large purchases and pocketing the change.

" In the quick exchange of cash, businesses are not noticing they are in fact fake," the police department said. "Businesses should use a counterfeit marker for large bills for verification. Police are asking for the public and businesses to stay vigilant and be observant of large cash purchases. Examine the bills and if they are fraudulent or suspicious please contact your local police department."

Using fake or counterfeit money in attempt to make purchases or services is a crime under the Pennsylvania Crimes Code as well as a federal crime, the police department said.
