PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Two people are dead and the suspect in their shooting was killed in a shootout with police after a multi-county chase across Central Pennsylvania on Friday morning.
Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) at 4:15 a.m., police responded to the 300 block of Sassafras Terrace in Mount Joy Borough for a report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, authorities found that multiple people had been shot and injured inside an apartment, including one person who died from their injuries.
PSP says that a suspect, Ricky Shannon, 22, of Altoona, was identified as fleeing the area and began a search for a red Ford pickup truck he was believed to have been driving.
Within minutes, police located the truck, and attempted to initiate a stop at 4:22 a.m.
A pursuit of the truck began, and police say they knew that Shannon was armed.
Authorities say the chase continued at a high rate of speed into Dauphin County for about 40 minutes until police were able to execute a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver on the truck on Route 147 around 5:00 a.m.
PSP say that once the truck was stopped, Shannon opened fire on State Troopers.
They returned gunfire and approached the truck in an attempt to render aid to Shannon. During that time, police realized that another person, a 19-year-old girl, was also an occupant of the truck.
Police say that darkness, window tinting, and airbag deployment from the crash prevented State Troopers from knowing that the teen was in the vehicle.
Both Shannon and the teen girl suffered gunshot wounds and were killed.
PSP said that in recent days, both Shannon and the teen had filed Protection From Abuse orders against each other.
Route 147 in Reed Township remains closed as police continue to investigate.
